Friendster RSS feed !

Maybe I was absent from the net for too long, Friendster now accepts rss feeds ? I can't seems to find where its displaying thou. Maybe I need to run and get a friend to log in, or maybe its the the Friendster lag thing.

Still, this would be good for bloggers like me. :)

Now if only Friendster could increase the speed and decrease the lag a lil' bit more ....

Damn Small Linux

I'm surfing the net and updating my journal, on a 50 MB Linux distro, firefox and all running on RAM, :D

It's called, Damn Small Linux, get it here.

This lightweight distro rules. I fixed my crashed hdd, recover some files, and prepared it for my new Gentoo installation (reiser4 formatted root baby). Also, the distro actually auto detected the 512MB I used for swap previously. Hei, I'm running the whole distro on my 768k RAM, ;p

This whole distro roX, while running the flux windows manager, CPU cycl rarely goes above 20% even while running firefox. Now while its working thou, firefox is a resource sucked, my RAM usage nearly triple after I loaded it. What surprised me was, firefox manage to lag the distro, even fully loaded into the RAM .....

freesco

Upgraded my freesco box from version 0.32 to 0.33. A bug in the adduser script screwed up some settings with the server. Since the new version came up, I thought what heck. freesco is a floppy based router distro. So installation took less than a minute. Putting it on a hdd and it'll be quite formidable. Small and quick, and made my old Acer Pentium 60 useful again. The upgrade process took less than 10 minutes.

Evrything in the distro is designed for speed and at the same time small in size. I'm running a dnsmasq firewall/router, 2 web servers (1 for internal admin stuffs, and the other is a public webserver), ftp server (internal only for now), print server (serves my 2 linux and windoze boxes) and a few monitoring tools all on my old pentium with 100MB harddisk and 48 MB ram.

Yes, I made all those work on an old box in less than 10 minutes thanks to freesco, :)

KDE 3.3.0 & Portage nightmare ......

I've just upgraded by Gentoo's desktop to KDE 3.3. Everything was nicer and smoother (With prelink updated ofcourse, check out my prelinking Gentoo doc here ). After playing around with it for about 2 mins, I realized that my Kopete wasn't working ...... there goes my MSN/ICQ/YAHOO/IRC client.

At first I thought the fault was at the Kdenetwork package, so I reemerged it. Still the same problem occurs. Finally I realized that kde3.3 moved the kde libs to another location and Kopete in the 3.3.0 Kdenetwork package wasn't informed ..... So I just make a link to it, and walla .. its working again.

My Gentoo box is a little messy now. Although the portage system was a good idea, somehow it still makes your system messy with unused packages since the unmerge script doesn't do dependency unmerging. It lacks the control and the older manual installation gives. Well, nothing is perfect .....

Now that I've experienced Gentoo's portage system first hand, I might draw up a guide in the near future about how to becauseful while emerging, so people won't repeat my mistakes, ;p

Which reminds me ... I'm gonna do a clean Gentoo installation soon, and emerge the smarter way ........

Gmailed !!!!!!!!!

After chatting with several "Gmailed" friend, I finally have an invite, lol. So what's the big deal about this beta software ?

1) Google ppl made it
2) 1G storage, hello ?
3) Its still an invite only service, being part of it sounds cool thou ?

Other things that I've been doing for the week. I have a usb phone charger from HP, I used the nokia adapter thou. I'm a nokia paranoid, :D I can't seemed to get it to work with M$ Wind0ws, so I thought I'll try my luck with my linux pc. I plugged it in ... it worked ....... Just like that, no tricks ! ;p

Well, setting up a usb wheel mouse manually really pays off it seems. A while back I've been working to get the wheel of my mouse to work, since Gentoo's initial installation didn't fix it. Well, now that everythings working, I'm happy, :D

School started, I'm doing a subject called "Commercial Programming" this semester, and guess what's the choosen programming language for programming commercially ? Yep, its that sucky, slow, non-multiplatformed, non-updated to work with newer application, yucky M$ Vi$ual B@sic. Hurrah ........

Java = uncool ?

Really ? Basicly I like programming in JAVA. It's well, easy, and well documented. Speed wise, it has been proven that the modern JVM run as fast or even faster than C compiled programs, thou the startup is slower. I only started programming in JAVA when my college switch most of the subjects programming language to JAVA from C . Well, to me its almost the same, programming is programming, :)

Some guy actually wrote something about it here ....

Reiser4 is released!

Reasons why Reiser4 is great for you:

- Reiser4 is the fastest filesystem, and here are the benchmarks.

- Reiser4 is an atomic filesystem, which means that your filesystem operations either entirely occur, or they entirely don't, and they don't corrupt due to half occuring. We do this without significant performance losses, because we invented algorithms to do it without copying the data twice.

- Reiser4 uses dancing trees, which obsolete the balanced tree algorithms used in databases (see farther down). This makes Reiser4 more space efficient than other filesystems because we squish small files together rather than wasting space due to block alignment like they do. It also means that Reiser4 scales better than any other filesystem. Do you want a million files in a directory, and want to create them fast? No problem.

- Reiser4 is based on plugins, which means that it will attract many outside contributors, and you'll be able to upgrade to their innovations without reformatting your disk. If you like to code, you'll really like plugins....

- Reiser4 is architected for military grade security. You'll find it is easy to audit the code, and that assertions guard the entrance to every function.

Dynamic DNS

Dynamic DNSes rules, as long as you can keep them updated, haha.

I've tried dyndns and noip, however, now I've switched to freedns. I'm tired of dyndns' rules and regulations about update and their money minded campaign, no offence to those whom are already using it. I just found a better one ... freedns, :). It is hosted on FREEBSD servers, and offers more domain names and features, and yet, its all free .... All they ask for is for a small link to their site in your site.

Now, thanks to my new dynamic DNS account, I still need to fine tune my update script .... something which I have yet to do, ;p

Expect hiccups on my site once in a while until I perfect my script, :)

Weapons of Mass Destruction

Another prove that Google's page-ranking formula can be fooled. Pretty funny too, :)

In the search box type "Weapons of Mass Destruction", and click on "I'm Feeling Lucky".

For the meaning of google, you can try this

LINUX is an alien word to Windoze users ......

Micro$oft word doesn't recognize "linux" or "BSDs" in its dictionary, haha. I noticed this while I was writing some documentation on one of the linux distro on my work place computer.

Maybe its only politics, like how http://hotmail.com is never saved in Netscape and Opera browsers' shortcuts, ;)

Weeee !

I fixed my servers boys and girls.

Here are few things you kids should remember when setting up a http server,

1) Remember to do the correct chmod, (chmod 711) :D

2) Cut and paste from GUI browsers (FTP) might spoil the permissions and ownerships !

Moral of the story ? Don't be lazy, do it the leet way, and ftp/ssh to your server.
